Manager as Coach...
Coaching Others to Succeed

Coaching Others to Succeed
People are incresingly dissatisfied with the traditional “boss-subordiante” style of management and recognize the need to imporve their interpersonal skills in order to help others achieve success. Teaching people to be “manager coaches” helps organizations achieve key business objectives while maintaining individuals’ dignity. Experience tells us that managers with coaching skills have the advantage of an increased ability to retain top talent and “grow” those who will eventually be promoted to management positions.

Because they have to “get things done through others”, managers who also coach continue to give advice and instrcutions and may tell someone what to do and/or how to do it. At the same time, they use coaching as a performance improvement tchnique that compliments and enhances other improvement programs such as performance feedback.

In contrast, professionally trained coaches typically do not tell others what to do and how to do it. They hold clients accountable for taking action toward their goals and create the motivation to drop well-ingrained habits that get in the way of their success.
